After becoming aware of the compelling and conflicting trends in our global food system, I see really, really good answers in the thousands of lawns, yards, gardens and spaces that fill every community across our nation. Not only can we grow a lot of our food in our own backyard, we can grow that food beautifully, create lush native habitat and bring resilience to our own home and the communities around us as we transition off of carbon fuels.
I am a hobbyist gardener turned dedicated urban farmer and local food advocate. In this blog I intend to explore the challenges and delights of turning our homes into edible oases, rich with both food and beauty. I will document my successes and failures as I try various techniques, and I will also discuss a variety of approaches that I see being used successfully in other gardens. My personal interest is in edible landscape design. Since I am transitioning from container gardening and using starts from the local plant nursery to a backyard garden plot, there is a lot for me to learn. This blog will evolve with me as I move from the fundamentals of soil, seed and cultivation to principles of garden design, patterns, color, texture, productivity and conservation.
